Unfortunately, when Bianca isn’t around after school, Javier is bullied into falling down a staircase and smacking his head - which unlocks psychic powers that can see people’s pasts and futures when instigated by physical touch. Javier’s bestie Bianca ( Ireon Roach) is his rock, willing to beat an athlete bloody if they utter a single insult. He’s gay, he’s Mexican-American, and he’s surrounded by small-minded jocks who mock anything outside their suburban status quo. It’s seven days until graduation at Springhurst High, and Javier ( Ignacio Diaz-Silverio) is just trying to survive until college. Director Clare Cooney’s feature debut is more competent than confident, relying on select performances and cheeky metatextual callbacks to overcompensate for a less successful balancing of subgenres. It’s refreshingly genuine in terms of treating queer relationships with normalcy, but schoolyard slasher tension dulls without sharp execution. Jose Nateras’ screenplay massages LGBTQ+ themes into an adorable-awkward-angsty teen romance threatened by deadly obstacles (outside cruel bigotry). ![]() In the canon of high school-set slashers, Departing Seniorsis a moderate achiever - the middle of the pack. As a result, the film features a cast comprised almost entirely of Native and First Nation’s talent, including Amber Midthunder (“The Ice Road,” “Roswell, New Mexico”), newcomer Dakota Beavers, Stormee Kipp (“Sooyii”), Michelle Thrush (“The Journey Home”), Julian Black Antelope (“Tribal”). Myers, an acclaimed filmmaker, Sundance Fellow and member of the Comanche nation herself, is known for her attention and dedication to films surrounding the Comanche and Blackfeet nations and her passion for honoring the legacies of the Native communities. The filmmakers were committed to creating a film that provides an accurate portrayal of the Comanche and brings a level of authenticity that rings true to its Indigenous peoples. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown between the two adversaries. She has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, Prey is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. ![]() But here we are, this movie resets a whole lot of paradigms, and one of them is the language component.” Myers adds, “I know that Navajo has done it twice, with Star Wars, but Star Wars was 30 years old when that came out, Finding Nemo was 20 years old. You get the option of watching it in Comanche on a brand new film.” “So that’s really important to me and the language component’s very important because this will also be the first time that a film has been completely (dubbed). ![]() “We do have like Comanche throughout the film, but when you first choose to watch the film, this will be the first time that the Comanche language, and I’m Comanche, by the way, this will be the first time that our language is in a full dub and also subtitled for the whole film,” Myers explains. Producer Jhane Myers has revealed something really cool about Prey in the wake of the trailer dropping, telling that the film will receive a full Comanche language dub. From 20th Century Studios, the return of the franchise is directed by Dan Trachtenberg ( 10 Cloverfield Lane), with Amber Midthunder (“Legion”) starring as a Comanche woman who takes on the ultimate hunter. This morning kicked off with the official trailer for Prey, the brand new installment in the Predator franchise that’s coming exclusively to Hulu on August 5. ![]()
